I read recently in Luxist that the Westin Hotel chain is using magazine scent strips to advertise their new signature scent: “White Tea. The Calming New Scent of Westin”, which according to Brandweek will be “faintly wafting this spring in Westin properties worldwide”. Sure enough, there is a strip in my latest New Yorker. It smells vaguely like a cross between Bvlgari's Green tea and White tea fragrances, and I would venture to guess that it isn't all that different from the lemongrass and green tea fragrance used at Omni hotels. I mentioned last week that I'd heard various stories about the new limited edition Eau des Merveilles Constellation from Hermès: some said the fragrance was exactly the same as the regular Eau des Merveilles, some said it was slightly different. Finally, I did the obvious: I emailed Hermès. According to their customer support, the juice is exactly the same as the Eau de Toilette version of Eau des Merveilles.
It goes without saying, I should think, that Guerlain is one of the world’s great perfume houses. They have a long and deservedly glamorous history, and they are responsible for any number of the marvels of modern perfumery. In particular, Mitsouko (1919) and Shalimar (1925) make almost every list of the perfume classics that will withstand the test of time.
So it is with great personal shame that I admit that I don’t really properly appreciate the classic, pre-1950 Guerlain fragrances…
