Two new contributors will be joining Now Smell This:

Angela Sanders writes about Pacific Northwest culture and history, and now about her secret love, perfume. She will be writing about women's perfume; look for her first article, on finding your holy grail (in fragrance, that is) tomorrow.

Kevin S. is a senior editor at an international newswire service and also gives gallery talks on Buddhist and Hindu art at the Seattle Art Museum/Seattle Asian Art Museum. Kevin will be covering home fragrance, including incense, scented candles and room sprays. His review of Pacifica's Nile Lily candle will appear later in the week.

Luca Turin The Secret of ScentUnderstanding how smell works is a bit like trying to fix a radio, with the premise that a) you have little knowledge of its components, and b) the darn thing didn't come with a wiring diagram. For seven decades, scientists have explored the various components of the olfactory system, and how they are connected to each other. But despite their hard work, the fundamental question has remained unanswered: how does our nose 'read' odorant molecules? Biochemist and perfume connoisseur Luca Turin thinks he cracked the code, and wrote a book about it: The Secret of Scent.

Caron Muguet du Bonheur perfume review

Caron Muguet du Bonheur fragrance

Caron released Muguet du Bonheur in 1952 to honor the traditional French practice of presenting sprigs or bouquets of muguet (lily of the valley) as a good luck token on May Day. The fragrance was developed by Caron perfumer Michel Morsetti, and has notes of lily of the valley, lilac, jasmine, magnolia, pear, heliotrope and musk.
