Scented body products: Malin + Goetz Peppermint Hair Shampoo and Cilantro Hair Conditioner

Posted by Jessica on 31 December 2006 9 Comments

Malin + Goetz Peppermint ShampooThe streamlined product list of Malin + Goetz includes “paired performance systems” of cleansers and moisturizers for body, face, and hair, as well as fragrance and candles. Peppermint Hair Shampoo and Cilantro Hair Conditioner are quintessential Malin + Goetz products, embodying the brand’s philosophy of "Natural Ingredients. Performance Technology”: they combine botanical extracts with gentle synthetic ingredients, and they are packaged in the company’s trademark minimalist bottles, labeled with ingredients and instructions in no-nonsense type. Founders Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz developed their business as a union of science and style, and the products sold by their “modern apothecary” are intended for both men and women of all skin types.

At first this one-size-fits-all strategy made me feel skeptical. My hair, for example, is somewhat hard-to-please: it’s wavy, slightly dry, and thick but easily weighed down. However, both products were pleasant surprises for me. The shampoo is thoroughly cleansing but not drying, and the creamy, concentrated conditioner rinses out easily, leaving softness without any unwanted heaviness. Furthermore, their fragrances are even more satisfying than their effectiveness. The Peppermint Hair Shampoo is easily the most intensely minty product I have ever used, surpassing any mint-scented soap, shower gel, or toothpaste in my memory. Its generous dose of peppermint essential oil also has a highly therapeutic effect, making my entire head tingle in a way that's cooling on summer days and invigorating on chilly winter mornings.

The fragrance of the Hair Conditioner, when used afterwards, is almost soothing by contrast. Its cilantro extract smells sweetly herbal, like the actual cilantro leaves that add a fresh garnish to so many recipes; blended into the conditioner’s formula, it also gains a clean, slightly soapy aspect. Both scents, enjoyable as they are, are engineered to leave no lingering traces, so that the user can remain fragrance-free for the rest of the day or can apply other fragranced products without olfactory conflict.

A visit to the Malin + Goetz shop in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood further reveals the company’s interest in modern design and the balance of paired opposites. The storefront boutique itself is a pristine, brightly lit, white cube, with all the products arranged for instant identification and easy access. The office, visible just beyond a swinging partition, is a more down-to-earth, cluttered space, with exposed brick walls and racks of metal shelves weighed down by paperwork, office supplies, and — most intriguing — lab bottles of new products in development.

I'm a Shampoo & Conditioner junkie, Jessica, so it's always interesting to hear about new possibilities. The mint shampoo sounds…strong…I'm not sure I'd want to smell like toothpaste…so I think I'd pass. The conditioner sounds good, though (is it a new trend to have different scents for shampoo and conditioner – I've noticed several lines doing this?), and I know I like cilantro, but I can't remember what that is in UK English, LOL! Is it basil? Lemongrass? Anyway, happy New Year, and look forward to reading more in 2007! Nina.

It plain sucks when a shampoo weighs down your hair, doesn't it? This line isn't readily available where I live, but you make it sound so wonderful I'll have to seek it out! Happy New Year, Jessica!

Cilantro seems to be US for Coriander.

I am too a Shampoo/conditioner Junkie, even though because of workplace policies I do not wear my hair too long nowadays (stiff company, pure looks).

I never tried Malin+Goetz, but I can recommend Phytotheratrie's Phytoneutre wich smells strongly of eucalyptus. Also anything on the H2O+ line, they are a bit outdated nowadays, but the products are ok and smell fabulous.

    Happy new year to all.

Thank you Dusan, and Happy New Year to you, too! I really do like the quality of Malin + Goetz's products (including their delicious Dark Rum candle and their scent-free, but excellent, facial scrub and lip moisturizer). They're a young company, and I have a feeling that they're continuing to expand, so you may start seeing them more and more places. 🙂

Hi, VanillaGirl and Kaos. I believe that coriander and cilantro are parts of the same plant, coriander being the seeds and cilantro the leaves. 🙂

I can also recommend the hair products from Avalon Organic Botanicals; they are good quality and have wonderful (but not too strong) natural scents. Another, more recent favorite of mine is the John Masters Organics line.

    Thanks for your comments. 🙂

You had me at “cilantro leaves.” I'm not terribly picky about which brands of hair gunk I use, but I am such a cilantro junkie. Oooohweee, that sounds like I have a new conditioner to pick up! I've GOT to try it, sounds lovely.

Hi Katie! One more good thing about the M + G conditioner is that it's quite concentrated, so one (expensive) bottle does last for a long time! Also, have you ever tried the Coriander lotion from Kiehl's? That's another good coriander/cilantro-scented product.

No! I usually skip the Kiehl's shop for some reason… Is it more like fresh cilantro or like coriander? (I don't enjoy coriander particularly, for whatever reason.)

Hi! To me, it's a fresh, green scent, but also soft and a little powdery. It's definitely more clean and comforting than spicy.

Fun fact: Matthew Malin of M + G used to work for Kiehl's. It's a small world. 🙂
