Perfume & lasting power: a lament

Last night I sat down to finish off a review of one of my favorite fragrances by Jo Malone, Black Vetyver Café. Here is part of what I wrote:

Black Vetyver Café starts with dark coffee beans, freshly ground and almost-but-not-quite bitter, with a woody-nutty undertone. There is a faint trail of dry, smoke-free incense, and hints of pepper and light spices. Over the next 15 minutes, the coffee fades and the vetiver and woods intensify…

I love those first 15 minutes of Black Vetyver Café, but eventually gave up on finishing the review. There isn’t much more to say. The fragrance doesn’t entirely disappear after 15 minutes, but its glory is pretty much over by 30, and what remains after an hour is too bland to talk about at any length…

Idole de Lubin perfume review

Lubin Idole fragrance

Idole was released last year by the newly re-established house of Lubin. Rather than reissue one of the many fragrances in their back catalog (465, according to the Lubin history website), they have created something entirely new, borrowing only the name from a Lubin fragrance from the 1960s. The inspiration for the fragrance comes from the early sea trade in precious spices, which linked the East African islands of Madagascar and Zanzibar to points farther east, including the Kingdom of Siam and the island of Java…

New fragrance report: Elite, Hermes, Christian Dior, and Annick Goutal

Elite is a new line from Groupe Arthes with two fragrances. Elite Model Attitude for her (see bottle at left) was created by perfumer Richard Herpin and has notes of muguet, pear, cassis buds, rose, violet, osmanthus, woody amber, tonka bean, and caramel accord. Elite Model Attitude for him was created by nose Henri Bergia and has notes of anise, bergamot, black pepper, caraway, white cedar, juniper berry, musk, vanilla and vetiver. More on Annick Goutal Songes (see Saturday): in addition to frangipani, ylang ylang, jasmine and vanilla, the fragrance also has notes of vetiver, sandalwood and amber…
