Perfume in the news: Harry Slatkin, fragrance TV & fragrant hotels

Posted by Robin on 23 May 2006 13 Comments

Slatkin Black Fig & Absinthe fragranceHarry Slatkin of Slatkin & Co has a sensitive nose:

We all know what it's like to be downwind from the lady at the opera who slathered too much tuberose on herself before the performance. You feel as if you're going to pass out.

Welcome to my world.

My defense is a long scarf and a bottle of Black Fig and Absinthe, a licorice-hinted fragrance that I created. I spray the scarf and cover myself with it while I'm on a plane or in a cab.

A reality show about perfume? It was bound to happen eventually:

A TV series is to be aired in which a fragrance will be developed — from concept to market — in just six months, as opposed to the regular two-year time frame.

Living TV, which is behind the series that begins next week, hopes to prove the experts wrong by creating the fragrance at the double. It will also show the problems encountered along the way.

Living TV is a UK channel, so those of us in the US are out of luck. (via cosmeticsintl)

The Park Hyatt Vendome in Paris joins a long list of hotels using ambient fragrance to stand out in the crowded travel industry:

When artisan perfumer Blaise Mautin was asked by a Paris hotel to create a scent for the soaps and shampoos in its bathrooms, the fragrance became so popular the hotel decided to use the unique aroma throughout the building

Now, scented candles burning Mautin's scent waft through the Hyatt Park Vendome's corridors, housemaids replenish rooms with a quick squirt and it is even in the air conditioning.

The entire hotel has been designed to stimulate all of the senses through its aesthetic appearance, fabrics and gastronomy and general manager Michel Jauslin told CNN that the idea behind using Mautin's scent was to attach a smell to the experience of staying in the hotel.

R, could be fun to watch! We'll have to hope our UK friends post about it on MUA.

Unfortunately Living TV is one of those tiny channels that you need special equipment to get.

Mr Slatkin sounds a bit of a PITA, sensitive snoz or not. If I were that woman in the smoking compartment, I'd have sued his ass.

I hope the reality show will cross the pond soon! That would be fun, and no listening to bad singers or watching bad dancers!

Any idea what country the perfume reality show is from? UK? France? USA? Who is involved in the way of noses, branding, etc?

Oh, too bad on the show, it sounds like fun.

On Mr. Slatkin: have to agree, I'd be pretty mad if someone sprayed perfume in my face!

Ah – now I hadn't realised the TV show was about Jade Goody. I suspect you won't be missing much – Jade's usp is her extreme stupidity so this isn't likely to examine perfumery or anything really with much rigour.

I'm afraid I don't even know who she is — although doesn't sound like I need to!

Even so, I can't resist telling you. She's an ex Big Brother alumnus who appears regularly in Z list celeb magazines and the tabloid press. Seems reasonably well meaning but very very dim and looks a little like a bulldog. She is the sole living example of the tabloids realising they went too far – they were so vile about her when she was on Big Brother that there was concern that she would kill herself on exiting the house. So they suddenly started being very very nice to her and she hasn't been off TV or out of the papers since. Try googling Jade Goody and marathon for an insight. I detest all this being famous for being famous and nothing else stuff. Clearly I'm jealous.

Ok, if it is Jade Goody, then I am not going to hold my breath. Just read this, and it will be clear to you why. 🙂

I am so out of it that I had to google “Big Brother”. Now I see…and she has her own entry in Wikipedia. Totally agree about “being famous for being famous” — it is hard to imagine that anyone would care what perfume she wears, but apparently has just released one of her own.
