Chandler Burr, Publix & Frederic Malle: random perfume news

Posted by Robin on 27 February 2006 8 Comments

By Design is a radio show on ABC Radio National in Australia. This week's show considers design aspects of perfume, and includes a discussion with fragrance writer Chandler Burr. Thanks to Kerry of Tasmanian Photographers for the link!

Florida-based Publix supermarkets have been experimenting with in-store perfume counters:

At a Deerfield Beach Publix, the sleek oaken perfume counter stretches a full aisle and offers shoppers the chance to pick up a $55 bottle of Armani perfume for $34.99, along with their jug of milk and loaf of bread.

Apparently the strategy is working; the typical counter does $500,000 a year in sales.

Frederic Malle is relocating from Paris to New York and plans to expand his fragrance line's presence in the United States:

Besides more shops-in-shops as Barneys expands across the country in the coming year, Malle will open stand-alone boutiques in New York and Los Angeles. (via Women's Wear Daily)

Does this mean that we would no longer be able to order directly from France?I found that it worked out to still be cheaper to order from them directly then to pay the prices Barney's charges and I recieved my packages quicker!

Frederic Malle is moving to NY, but the business is remaining in Paris, so no worries 🙂

Hey! That's my Publix – it's across the street from Dad's house, and I'm suprised that it's so successful with a TJ Maxx and Marshall's in the same plaza…and Scentiments just down the road…who woulda thought?

Maybe they'll give me samples to share? I imagine you've probably tried ever Malle, though.
