Are you a niche snob?

Posted by Robin on 10 June 2005 82 Comments

Serge LutensIt has been a long week, and whatever brain (and nose) power I have left, I am holding in reserve for a big day of perfume shopping tomorrow. So no review today — just a question: are you a niche snob?

I have been thinking about my own prejudices since reading Luca Turin's wonderful new blog, Perfume Notes, and especially his commentary on niche scents (link no longer working, sorry!), which he generally finds lacking in comparison to releases from the big houses. My own leanings are in the opposite direction. When I look at my own perfume collection, a huge proportion of the bottles are from the smaller niche houses, some of which, granted, he mentions as exceptions: Serge Lutens, Frederic Malle, and Parfums de Nicolaï.

Others I see well-represented in my perfume cabinet…

Fragrance of the day: Miya Shinma Sakura

Posted by Robin on 9 June 2005 17 Comments

Miya Shinma Sakura perfume

Miya Shinma Sakura features notes of cherry blossom, white rose, rose, peony, cassis, lemon, cedar, and white musk.

Sakura starts with cherry blossom, and lots of sparkling citrus — lemon, and possibly grapefruit or yuzu. It quickly fades to a very sweet and fruity rose scent, rather like rose jam with hints of berries and musk. It is pretty but I don’t find it particularly interesting.

I am very fond of Sakura tea, which is usually made by scenting Japanese sencha green tea with cherry blossoms. I was rather hoping this would capture that ethereal, spring-like scent, but it smells more like candy than cherry blossoms to me…

Serge Lutens fans: new fragrances!

Posted by Robin on 9 June 2005 14 Comments

Many thanks to Mike, who posts on the basenotes men's forum, for permission to reprint his reviews of the upcoming releases from Serge Lutens:

The first, Cedre, is in the internationally-distributed collection. It is a lovely, sweet and heavily ambered version, about as far away from the fresh, “hamster cage” note often associated with this wood as it is possible to get. I detect cinnamon, apple, tabac, perhaps carnation too. Very resinous – those Serge diehards who whinged that their idol had strayed too far from the orientals when creating the magnificent trio of Chene, Daim Blond and Miel du Bois will see Cedre as a return to form.

If Cedre is a delight, albeit one with a familiar feel, Borneo 1834 is an altogether stranger beast…
