NellyRodi Scent Factory: Part 1

Posted by Robin on 8 September 2005 29 Comments

NellyRodi Scent Factory

Paris-based trend forecasting service NellyRodi was established in 1985, and is now jumping on a fragrance trend themselves with Scent Factory, a collection of 8 oriental-themed fragrances by noses from the major fragrance & flavor houses.

I will start right off by admitting that I was attracted to this line before I sniffed a single one of the perfumes. I like the concept. I like the packaging. I like the price — or at least, I’m not completely turned off by the price. I like the fact that I don’t have to spend hours on the internet searching for the fragrance notes or the names of the perfumers. Parfum 1 is Incense by Alexis Dadier of Mane, and features rosemary, cinnamon, nutmeg, incense, styrax, rose, vanilla, sandalwood. Incense starts as a sweet blend of herbal and resinous notes…

My olfactory gallery of autumnal scents cannot be imagined without quince. According to a Georgian tale, quince took all summer to decide whether it was a pear or an apple, when suddenly the chills of autumn arrived, and there it was—neither pear nor apple, neither sweet nor pretty. Yet, the scent of this fruit is unlike any other—sweet, with a honeyed undercurrent, as well as fresh with a spicy exotic note. The fragrance of quince would pervade my house when I was growing up, as my mother made her quince preserves, boiling hard pieces of fruit in sugar syrup till they released their unique fragrance and turned into rose coloured jewels. The aroma would rise up like a breeze from the exotic gardens of a faraway land…

Strange Invisible Perfumes: Lady Day

Posted by Robin on 7 September 2005 27 Comments

Lady Day

Strange Invisible Perfumes Lady Day was inspired by jazz vocalist Billie Holiday, who was known affectionately to her fans as Lady Day and who always performed with white gardenias in her hair. The fragrance notes are gardenia, lemon verbena, blood orange, jasmine, and sandalwood.

Lady Day opens with a burst of gardenia. It is heady and overbearing, much like a freshly cut gardenia flower, and too much of a good thing for the first 20 minutes or so…
