Mattel has recently started distributing the Barbie line of fragrances in the UK. Read Caitland Moran's opinion in the Times Online.

There is an interesting interview with perfumer Olivier Cresp on the Osmoz website.

Forbes Magazine, taking note of the recent spate of celebrity fragrances, has some excellent suggestions for fragrance releases from famous business executives.

Miss Dior was released by Christian Dior in 1947, shortly after the success of his groundbreaking “New Look” collection. It was Dior’s first perfume, and was created by either Paul Vacher or Jean Carles (or possibly both), under the direction of Dior’s childhood friend Serge Heftler-Louiche. The fragrance notes include gardenia, galbanum, clary sage, aldehydes, jasmine, rose, neroli, narcissus, iris, carnation, lily of the valley, patchouli, labdanum, oakmoss, ambergris, sandalwood, vetiver, and leather.

Miss Dior was said to have been influenced by both Chypre de Coty and Vent Vert (see Michael Edwards, Perfume Legends). It starts strong and sharp…

guerlain-iris The latest limited edition from Guerlain, L'Instant Eau de Noel, is shown at right. The scent will feature citrus honey, magnolia, amber, and an added note of iris. Coming soon to sephora.

Jalaine Silk features notes of vanilla, amber, and white musk, and is already available at aedes.

NellyRodi Scent Factory

For an introduction to this set of 8 oriental fragrances by trend-spotting firm NellyRodi, see yesterday. Today I am trying the second half of the set…

Parfum 5 is Gingembre by Richard Ibanez of Robertet, and has notes of grapefruit, saffron, baie rose, nutmeg, ginger, incense, patchouli, vanilla, and amber. I love the effervescent top notes: tons of ginger and pink peppercorn, and a bright, sparkling grapefruit softened by the saffron. Although they have nothing in common other than the citrus and peppercorn, it is reminiscent of Hermès Rose Ikebana, but softer and spicier. It calms quickly to a lightly spicy fragrance with a hint of resins. The grapefruit lasts well into the dry down, but the sparkle is gradually obscured by sweet notes. This one was a close call, if it were a bit drier I would have loved it…
