Jean Kerleo on the state of modern perfumery

There is a nice interview with Jean Kerléo in the Business Standard (link no longer working, sorry!) covering various topics, including recent changes in the perfume industry. Kerléo was the house nose for Jean Patou from 1967 until 1998, a period that saw the release of such classics as Sublime and 1000. He is also the founder of the Osmotheque, the living perfume museum in Versailles. On the state of modern perfumery:

Limited edition fragrances for 2005

Expect to see a load of new limited edition fragrances from Unilever Cosmetics this Spring and Summer, according to an article in the Moodie Report. Calvin Klein will have three: ck one summer; Eternity Summer and Eternity Summer for Men; and Cerruti will release Cerruti 1881 Eau D’Été pour Femme and Cerruti 1881 Fraicheur D’Eau pour Homme. Also expect Chloé Collection 2005 and a new Vera Wang to be called Sheer Veil, featuring rose, violet, white stephanotis, gardenias and white lilies.

A love song to Diptyque Philosykos

As a followup to yesterday’s post about fig fragrances, I’d like to blather on about Diptyque Philosykos, one of my favorite perfumes and certainly a contender for inclusion in my personal desert island Top 10. Created by Olivia Giacobetti and released in 1996, Philosykos is fig with green notes and a woody-earthy base. It smells like the whole fig grove, including the trees and the warm earth, and while the fig note itself is sweet and creamy, the sweetness is tempered by other notes and is never overwhelming.

Philosykos was included in one of the first sample orders I made after becoming seriously interested in perfume, and I pretty much hated it at first sniff…

2005 FiFi Award finalists

This year's Fifi award finalists have been announced by The Fragrance Foundation. The Fragrance Foundation describes the Fifis as the “Oscars of the fragrance industry”, and that seems apt; like the Oscars, the Fifis tend to reward the blockbusters and to ignore the truly innovative or creative work in the field. But enough of my cynicism, here are the nominees in the major women's categories:
