Online shopping news

Posted by Robin on 26 February 2005 2 Comments

Thank you to Holly for pointing out guillotapothecary.com. I am not familiar with the store, but they still have the "old" L’Artisan prices.

Aedes has L’Artisan Tea for Two back in stock.

Lusciouscargo has The Different Company’s Jasmine de Nuit in stock. The lines Acqua di Parma/Blu Mediterraneo and Amouage are coming soon, as is Parfums de Rosine Une Folie de Rose, to be followed by Rose d’Homme(!!).

New packaging at Aroma M

Aroma M fragrance bottlesAroma M has repackaged their original Geisha collection, which includes O-Cha, Nobara-Cha, and Hana-Cha. The bottles are now wrapped with Japanese Yuzen papers and come in a kimono fabric bag.

Very pretty! I can't say I loved any of the perfumes, but my favorite was O-Cha, a blend of green tea, sweet orange, and clary sage. Apologies if this is old news; see their press release here (link no longer working, sorry).

Perfume of the day: Houbigant Apercu

Houbigant Apercu fragrance bottle

Houbigant first released Aperçu in 1925; it was re-launched (and presumbably re-formulated) in 2000. The fragrance notes are bergamot, neroli, jasmine, tuberose, lemon, green leaf, sandalwood, oak moss, patchouli, clove, and cassis, bois de rose, geranium, cinnamon bark oil, ylang ylang, vetiver, and chypre.

Aperçu is a classic woody chypre. It starts rather heady and perfume-y, and I find the first 5 minutes rather hard to take. I would think this has aldehydes, although they aren’t listed in the notes. As it starts to calm, it is a lovely blend of neroli, green notes and florals with a nice spicy kick…

A few more words on fig fragrances…

Posted by Robin on 25 February 2005 9 Comments

Lisa kindly sent me a list of some fragrances I missed in the recent fig discussion. Her comments are in blue:

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Wild Fig: I have tried this. It is sweet and has other fruity notes, including peach. Nice but I prefer a drier fig…

Online perfume reading

While floating around the internet last weekend, I found this article in the UK Observer in which the paper has Lyn Harris, the nose behind the Miller Harris line, create a bespoke fragrance called Observer Review. In addition to describing the process of creating a custom fragrance, the article has interesting asides on Roja Dove, the London perfume boutique Les Senteurs, and the marketing of perfume in general. And if you're feeling daring, you can even buy the perfume for a £100 donation to the Observer Charity Christmas Appeal.

And thanks to Karen for pointing out this article in the Toronto Star (link no longer working) about two contenders for the title of the “original” Eau de Cologne — Mulhens 4711 and Farina Eau de Cologne. Farina, created in 1709, claims to be the “world's first documented brand-name perfume”; Edwin Morris, in Scents of Time, agrees that Farina created the first Eau de Cologne…
