Miller et Bertaux No. 2: Spiritus / Land

Miller et Bertaux No. 2 fragrance

Parisian designers Miller et Bertaux have been in business since 1985. They currently have several stores in Paris that carry clothing, home decor items, and cosmetics. I am not sure what year they introduced the 2 scents in their fragrance line, but there is a mention in Women’s Wear Daily about the scents being available at Bendels back in 1998.

I tried No. 2 briefly on a paper test strip at Takashimaya last fall, and was a little overwhelmed by the ginger. Today I am trying it on skin for the first time. The notes include incense, woods, pepper, cardamom, ginger, tobacco and rose…

At beautyhabit: Purchase any 2 i Profumi di Firenze perfumes and receive a free full size bottle of Mughetto di Primavera. Or, receive a free 15 ml Home Ambiance Spray (assorted scents) with any order of Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier. And you can still get $15 off any $50 purchase with code luckymag.

At lusciouscargo: The Amouage line is now available, as is Bond no. 9.

At beautysak: Several fragrance mark-downs, including discontinued scents by Lulu Beauty, Comptoir Sud Pacifique, Demeter and June Jacobs.

At perfumebay: They now have the newest Aqua Allegorias from Guerlain (Anisia Bella & Mentafollia). Also spotted but don't know how new they are to the site: Morgan de Toi, YSL In Love Again, Dior Me Dior Me Not.

At parfum1: They also have the 2 new Guerlain Aqua Allegorias. And they now have the Calypso line, and excellent prices on Caron Miss Rocaille. Also a bunch of the larger size (120 ml) Demeters. Coty Muguet des Bois is $6.95 for 53 ml -- you can't afford not to buy it!

At imaginationperfumery: They have the new YSL Opium Fleur de Shanghai. Not a huge savings, but you can get free shipping with a $75 order.

At scentiments: They have the Lily Prune line, but of course the one I want -- Sublime Vanilla -- is already out of stock. And: the large (120 ml) Demeters. On clearance: Annick Goutal Eau de Charlotte & Petite Cherie, YSL Nu testers, Molinard Nirmala, Alfred Sung Sha.

Demeter Grass fragranceDemeter Greenhouse fragrance

I tested 4 fragrances from Demeter over the weekend. I have no detailed reviews here, as there is only so much you can say — Demeter specializes in capturing a particular smell, and while they are frequently successful, these are not complex perfumes. Here is what I tried:

Grass: Like many of the fragrances in the line, it is short-lived on the skin, but for the time that it lasts, it smells pretty much like a freshly mown lawn. It is perhaps a little sweeter…this must have been a lawn with a few flowers here and there, or perhaps it is a particular kind of sweet grass.

Greenhouse: Starts a little sweet, but fades to a pretty floral that also captures the rest of the greenhouse: green leaves, humidity, soil. Nicely done, and lasted considerably longer than the others listed here…

More on Sillage de la Reine

Posted by Robin on 13 March 2005 4 Comments

Thank you to Karen for pointing out this great article in today's New York Times Sunday Magazine. The author describes attending a party at Versailles to celebrate the new biography of Marie Antoinette's perfumer, Jean-Louis Fargeon. Each of the party guests received a bottle of Sillage de la Reine, one of Marie Antoinette's perfumes that was recreated by Francis Kurkdjian from a formula found in the French national archives. Why wasn't I invited?

You can see a detailed list of the notes used in Sillage de la Reine in my post from February 25. The NYT article also mentions one other replica of a historical perfume: the Caterina de Medici fragrance made by i Profumi di Firenze.
