Hermes Hiris ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 19 September 2005 68 Comments

Hermes Hiris fragrance

Hiris was released by Hermès in 1999. The name refers to the iris flower, but also to the goddess Iris, who like Hermes was celebrated in Greek mythology as a messenger of the gods. The fragrance was created by nose Olivia Giacobetti, who used iris in the top, heart, and base notes, along with neroli, carrots, coriander, hay, rose, ambrette seeds, almond wood, cedar, honey, and vanilla.

The opening notes are simply stunning: crisp, dry and peppery iris, with lots of dirt-caked roots and greenery. I did not recognize the carrot note until I smelled L’Artisan Fleur de Carotte, and so learned what a carrot translated into perfumery smells like. Yes, there is carrot in Hiris too, although only for a brief while. As it dries down, the high pitched, almost metallic hum of the top notes calms, and the hay and wood notes intensify, along with a tiny whisper of rose…

Luctor et Emergo Enriched Body Cream by The People of the Labyrinths

Luctor et Emergo Enriched Body Cream

Those that have not yet tried the cult fragrance Luctor et Emergo by the Dutch fashion house, The People of The Labyrinths, will probably balk at the cost of the matching Enriched Perfume Body Cream: $95 for 200 ml. In fact, even this confirmed fan of the perfume was a bit taken aback. However, I have found this is a product whose quality matches its high price tag and it is an experience all to itself, just as rich and captivating as the perfume.

The presentation is exquisite…

Perfume review ~ Thierry Mugler Alien

Thierry Mugler Alien, fragrance advert

Alien, the latest fragrance release from Thierry Mugler, was created by perfumers Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyere, and features an “amber solar accord”, a woody Cashmeran note, and jasmine sambac.

Alien is Mugler’s first major fragrance for women since Angel was released in 1992. Angel has been so widely worn, and so widely copied, that it is difficult now to remember how distinctive it was considered upon its release. Reportedly some retailers were initially wary that it was too unusual and that it would never sell. As it turned out, of course, it sold quite well indeed, and Mugler acknowledges the challenge of following up a blockbuster debut:

“When we did Angel, we were completely innocent, and then it became number one in the world,” he said. “Creating Alien was a huge challenge because now the whole world is watching.” (via Women’s Wear Daily, 6/17/05)

So, what of Alien? It starts with something, I don’t know what, that is more of a feeling than a smell: dry, transparent, and warm…
