No fragrance review today…

Posted by Robin on 16 December 2005 34 Comments

A Victorian ChristmasI am running behind (as always) and must finish a few holiday chores. Will be back tomorrow with reviews of the Armani Privé fragrances.

At the moment I am testing Borneo 1834 by Serge Lutens (see the notes here). It is beautifully done, like all the Serge Lutens fragrances, but if you were to set out to create a fragrance I would be sure to dislike, you could not do much better than this. It is stunning though, and if you haven't tried it, I would recommend that you do, even if, like me, you hate patchouli. The patchouli is dry and earthy, the chocolate is bitter and dark, and the whole is wrapped in a sheer veil of murky forest green. I've done my duty and given it three tries, so now I can put it away. There, that was sort of a review, no?

What I want for Christmas

Answer: any of the fragrances mentioned in this article in the Times Online. Columnist Lucia van der Post talks to Roja Dove, "whose jewel of an Haute Parfumerie in Harrods, Knightsbridge, is a must-visit place for anybody with an interest in scent". He recommends some worthy fragrances for holiday gifts; among the choices: Diorama and Diorling. I'll take one of each.

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir fragrance review

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir perfume

Pomegranate Noir is the latest fragrance release from Jo Malone, the British perfumer who started out mixing fragrance oils in her kitchen and now heads the Jo Malone division under the ownership of Estee Lauder. It has notes of pomegranate, pink pepper, raspberry, plum, opopanax, frankincense, patchouli, musk, and spicy woods.

Pomegranate Noir starts with very dry, very peppery fruit. The pomegranate adds a nicely tart undertone, but for the most part it remains just that: an undertone, and the pepper likewise subsides as it settles into a lightly smoky blend of incense, earthy notes and woods…

Perfume news: Dolce & Gabbana, Coty & more

Posted by Robin on 15 December 2005 3 Comments

Dolce & Gabbana have signed a partnership with Procter & Gamble. Look for 3 new fragrances from the line over the next two years. (via International Herald Tribune)

The online site for Coty's Ex'clama'tion fragrance allows visitors to...

...create the "perfect bloke" by choosing his face, body, hairstyle and clothes. Users can then specify character traits, name him and submit their "Mr Right" into a competition to win a mini-iPod. Girls can also email their creations to friends. (via revolution)

The New York Times has an interesting article about custom cosmetics and fragrances, including snippets on Miller Harris and Scent Systems.
