Jasmin de Nuit is the latest fragrance from The Different Company, and the line’s first release created by Celine Ellena, daughter of well-known nose Jean-Claude Ellena. I believe that I read somewhere (but as usual can’t find the link) that Celine Ellena has spent some years creating fragrances for cosmetics. This is her first major perfume release, although she also created the now discontinued Biotherm Relax.
The notes for Jasmin de Nuit are bergamot, black currant, egyptian jasmine, star anise, cinnamon, cardamom, sandalwood, musk and amber. According to The Different Company, the fragrance has unusually high concentrations of Egyptian jasmine absolute, a variety which is said to have a fruitier undertone than those more commonly used in perfumery.
Jasmin de Nuit starts with lush, rich jasmine and just a touch of bergamot. The spices are quite strong and dusty, with a heavy dose of cardamom. The opening may be too heady for those who don’t care for spicy scents, but it was actually my favorite stage.
As it dries down, the amber and black currant become more apparent. The spices fade considerably — it is really only lightly spicy at most — and as the cardamom quiets it is possible to faintly make out the star anise and cinnamon. The jasmine itself is fairly muted, in fact I find the amber more pronounced than the jasmine after an hour so. After 2 hours, the jasmine was just a whisper under the amber. It is lightly sweet at most, and not as heavy as I expected.
The Different Company Jasmin de Nuit is a beautifully done fragrance, but I am not a big fan of amber and it will not be a full bottle purchase for me. Like the others in the line, this is an Eau de Toilette, but the style is less sheer than Osmanthus, Bois d'Iris or Divine Bergamote. The lasting power is reasonable. It is probably too heavy for a hot summer day, but it did not strike me as a fragrance that couldn't be worn during the day otherwise, so long as it has time to calm before you get on an elevator.

Morning R! Yes this is indeed a good creation by Celine Ellena – the lasting power is not as impressive on me. I agree that this maybe a bit heavy for summer but I tried it again yesterday and think it is perfect for a spring day. I think my favourites from The Different Company are the Divine Bergamot and Jasmin de Nuit. I am not not fallen hard enough to go buy this yet. 🙂

Hi N. They are very expensive, so it has to be true love! I was lucky to split an estagnon of Bergamote, I never would have paid the price for the glass bottle.
Do they have a free-standing boutique in Paris?
I know it must have something to do with the genes–SOMETHING–because the TDC scents and I are not friends. The jasmine one? Root beer. The Bergamote? the only TDC one that, for me, has a lovely opening, but wham— slammed to earth with something stale and funky. Just tried these in a batch of samps from Luckyscent. The winner (and it wasn't Janca, like I thought it would be [too gingery for moi] was Dammuso by ProfdiPantelleria. Now THERE'S a nice perf!

I just tried JdN and Divine Bergamot. I give JdN an A for originality, but something about the fragrance did not feel *comfortable* on me. The Bergamot was wonderful. Then *POOF*, it disappeared completely! Just went completely and totally flat on me. Guess neither one of these are for me, but I am glad that I finally took the time to test them.

Oh no! I was not interested in this one at all till your review! I have a love-hate relationship with Jasmine. And that relationship usually is heavy on the hate. I can absolutely love it if it's sweet and tender and hate it if it leans towards tuberose.
But I LOVE amber! So I am hooked enough to give it a try. I do own a decant of the Bergamote and want to buy that one. Somewhere I thought I saw some 30ml travel or refills, that seemed a more reasonable way to go, but now I don't know where I saw them. Any ideas?
LA, we have such different tastes. I liked but didn't love Dammuso. The Profumo di Pantelleria was more my style: a sort of light, citrusy thing with oakmoss IIRC.
Now how can Janca be too gingery if you love the Miller et Bertaux? I guess I haven't figured out your taste!

V, The bottles are meant to be refilled by the estagnon I mentioned. Lusciouscargo has it, and probably luckyscent & aedes too. There is an aluminum 10 ml travel bottle, and it is really well done & heavy, but very expensive!
Thanks R! I value your opinion! Well, it is because of the M and B that I didn't need the Janca. I love the M and B. The Janca, in that sense, is kind of a pale little sister.
Hmm. I'll have to try the other Pantellaria one. The only other one I tried was Nica.
I got a sample of this and all I can say is WOW! Amazingly seductive and alluring. Heady and sweet. I put on a few samples and then cuddled up with my husband. When he sniffed this one he really liked it. Four hours later, the scent was just as nice as when I put it on. A little lighter, but nonetheless, beautiful. This is the best of The Different Company line. I was hoping Rose Poivre would be a nice rose fragrance, however it ended up smelling very inscense like and the dry down was quite heavy on the corriander side. Disappointing indeed.
Glad you found a winner! Rose Poivree did not work for me either. My favorite from this line is still the Divine Bergamote.
Victoria, they do indeed sell three 10ML travel refills for the Different Co. scents, but not the Jasmin de Nuit yet. They are sold by Beautyhabit.com under 48 Heures Travel Kits and they offer 4 of their scents in the three little spray bottles for $55. Wish they did offer the Jasmin one.
